Pour fêter les quatre ans et trois mois ans d'existence du collectif Rarefish, nous organisons cette année le deuxième festival Rarefish au Magasin 4 à Bruxelles.

Ce qui à l’origine, il y a maintenant quatre ans, était un site web commun pour un nombre de groupes amis, s’est depuis lors développé en un group actif de musiciens se soutenant mutuellement Les nombreuses soirées Rarefish et les trois compilations nous on fait découvrir à chaque fois de jeunes musiciens intéressants qui se taillent leur propre chemin en dehors des sentiers battus. Rarefish s'est depuis converti en point de référence pour le post-rock, l'indie et l'électronique laptopienne belge. A l'affiche, huit groupes issus de l'aquarium Rarefish, allant des singer-songwriters au rock indie tranchant, en passant par la postrockpop ou encore l'indietronica chaleureuse. Le public aura l'occasion de découvrir ce que représente Rarefish après quatre ans de travail.

Qu'est-ce que Rarefish?

(en quelques mots) Le collectif Rarefish fut fondé il y a maintenant un peu plus de quatre ans par les membres du groupe défunt A December Lake. Nous sommes maintenant un regroupement de musiciens belges qui essaient de créer une plateforme pour des artistes musicaux en dehors du courant général. Rarefish contient des groupes de postrock, indietronica, slowcore, singer-songwriters, lo-fi, electronique, indie, idm...

Nos buts sont les suivants: maintenir cet endroit-même, cette plateforme internet; organiser des événements; et sortir des cd-r promotionnels. A présent, plusieurs spin-offs opèrent en parallèle avec Rarefish: Undercurrent, organisation de concerts à Anvers, Radio Rarefish, émission radio hebdomadaire sur la station locale anversoise Radio Centraal, Kasper Hauser Records, label indépendant, et Storing, webzine dédié aux musiques délicieusement obscures.





Rarefish bestaat nu al vier jaar en drie maanden en om dat te vieren organiseren we nu een tweede Rarefish festival in de Brusselse Magasin 4. Wat vier jaar geleden begon als een gezamenlijke website voor een aantal bevriende groepen, groeide uit tot een actieve groep muzikanten die elkaar ondersteunen. De vele Rarefish Nights en de drie verzamelcd's toonden steeds weer interessante jonge muzikanten die hun eigen ding doen buiten de mainstream. Rarefish.be groeide ondertussen uit tot een referentiepunt voor Belgische postrock, laptopelectronica en indierock.

Op de affiche staan acht groepen uit de Rarefish-stal, van singer-songwriters tot snedige indie, via poppy postrock en dromerige, instrumentale elektronica. Hiermee krijgt het publiek de kans om op één avond te ontdekken waar Rarefish staat na vier jaar.

Wat is Rarefish?

(in een paar woorden) Rarefish werd iets meer dan vier jaar geleden opgericht door het inmiddels ter ziele gegane A December Lake. Wij zijn nu een stel Belgische muzikanten die samen een platform trachten te creëren voor muziek die zich buiten de 'mainstream' bevindt. Rarefish omvat postrockgroepen, indietronica, slowcore, singer-songwriters, lo-fi, electronica, indierockgroepen, idm... Onze doelen zijn: deze site onderhouden, als platform op het internet; evenementen organiseren en promotionele cd-r's uitbrengen. Ondertussen zijn er ook heel wat spin-offs van Rarefish actief: concertavonden in Antwerpen onder de naam Undercurrent, de wekelijkse uitzending van Radio Rarefish op het Antwerpse Radio Centraal (106.7 fm), het cd-r label Kasper Hauser Records of nog het webzine Storing.

Tomàn is a quartet from West-Flanders. They fancy old analogue synths and mix them into their organic rocksound with lots of tension build-ups and eruptions. <br><br> Think American Analog Set, Explosions In The Sky, GrandaddyÂ… Their first full album, "Catching a Grizzly Bear, Lesson One", mixed by Jürgen De Blonde (aka Köhn) of De Portables, was released in april 2005 on Zeal Records – an instant Duyster favourite . <br><br> This year saw the release of their second full length album “Perhaps we should have smoked the salmon first”, to even greater critical acclaim. For those of you in need of new keywords, how about repetition, sparse electronics, choirs, melancholy, warm guitars, or Flemish blokes having fun? <br><br>
Steamer Cry Wolf are Patrick Van Neck, Mekhitar Garabedian, Kwinten Callens and David De Corte. A band that has always existed in one form or another. In 2000 they released a first cd called "No Fak wit Artjom", a collection of lo-fi recordings made during the years prior to that. Since then two EP's have been released, namely "06-2002" and "For The Last One", both on their homegrown Arsonist Recordings label. <br><br> Well recognised, the band always maintained a low profile, and could often be found gigging at somewhat a-typical events such as the Marty Brass expo space, and appearing in art performances by Claude Wampler and - more recently - Ben Benaouisse. <br><br> Late 2006 a full cd will be released through London based Amateur Athletics, containing new songs recorded by Karel De Backer. At Magasin4 they'll present their new album entitled "A Common Story". <br><br>
This an avant rock band consisting of four indie nerds trying to be coherently eclectic. They are not from America. They are European post-modern, young and healthy men willing to live the zeitgeist. <br><br> for creative purposes they use guitars, a bass, drums and some effect pedals. they exist as such since early 2006 and will continue to do so until the end of language. their first ep will see the light of day at the end of 2006. <br><br> Wixel, Nilo, Stino and the Michael play in this boys only club. The sounds have reminded people of Interpol, Â…Trail of Dead, Blonde Redhead, Hood, Modest Mouse and Michael Jackson. <br><br>
Balderdash
Balderdash are a trio from Brussels. <br><br> Their sound is based on a tight, adventurous rhythm section and a penetrating guitar sound. The vocals refer to the sonority of the eighties. The experiment is served with a greasy rock'n'roll sauce. <br><br> Main influences: the experiment of The Ex, the rhythm of The Jesus Lizard, the irony of Rapeman, the chilly sound of Tool and Shellac and the foolishness of Killdozer and Jandek. <br><br>
Well, there are four of them. One plays guitar and sings, one just plays guitar, another one plays bass and the last one drums. All four of them live in the outskirts of "het Meetjesland". <br><br> Pretty boring you say? Well, you're probably right, but what makes them so different is that they don't see songs as a way to change the world but as an excuse to make amounts of racket and make some people nearly deaf (including themselves). <br><br> Some members of the band are also involved in noise projects (including the legendary Barco Orch) and the bassist is a smoker... Now that's some rock attitude for you! <br><br>
Indie band Natilla from Hasselt was formed by members of instrumental postrock bands Willo The Wisp and Starfield Season, and alternative popband Coem. A singer with some acoustic songs became a band with a melancholy but edgy guitar sound, not unlike Karate or Death Cab for Cutie to name but a few. <br><br> Their first live experience ever was a few years ago during the rock contest Limbomania, where they reached the finals. Quite surprised themselves, they decided to go on with Natilla and get together whenever there is time. <br><br> Meanwhile they've been recording songs for a debut album, some of which you can listen to on their myspace.com/natillaman. Natilla is also a kind of Catalan dessert, and it is good for you! <br><br>
Wixel is the indietronica outfit of young Belgian Wim Maesschalck. His music can be described as a warm & organic mix of acoustic instruments and gentle electronic treatments with a lot of care for detail and subtle nuances. <br><br> Comparisons have been made with bands ranging from Hood to Fennesz, from Manyfingers to Sigur Ros. After (sold-out) releases on small European cd-r labels like Soundzfromnowhere and Mechanized Mind, summer 2006 saw the release of Wixel's debut Heart, The album has already generated quite some attention from the Belgian press and resulted in several shows and appearances on compilations, including a track on the Domino sampler that came free with a recent issue of The Wire. <br><br> Wixel has played countless shows in various formations, from introvert laptop sets to ‘unplugged’ acoustic gigs with a full band. Now he's looking to play his music across Belgium and Europe with a 3-piece live band. <br><br>
Can be viewed as one of the main projects of this Antwerp based musician /// being a guitarist of the obscure band el torturado = the other one /// <br><br> From the late 1999’s he began to experiment with an analog 4+2 track recorder & his µ-zika could be described as very instrumental , very repetitive + a bit minimal ... elektrical/acoustical <<>> electronical. <br><br> Tones overlaid with slights of noise, frequencies, produced by tapeloops & some musique concrète created by field recordings gently interfere with analog bits of synthesized slow passing melodies... <br><br>
